In 1968, the very first Kim's Martial Arts School was established in Fairview Park, Ohio. And since that time, the Kim family has built many martial arts schools across the region and produced thousands of martial artists in Northeast Ohio. At John Kim's Martial Arts and Fitness, we feel great pride and appreciation to have the opportunity to support each and every student in their pursuit of achievement, health and wellness, and a balanced lifestyle living the principles of taekwondo. Each student inspires us and we look forward to the chance to get you more involved in our martial arts school.
Grand Master John J. Kim
Owner and Head Instructor
Master John Joseph Kim began his martial arts training over 30 years ago under his master and father Grandmaster Myung Hwan Kim. At 3 years old Master John Kim was the youngest student in Kim’s history training in both taekwondo and judo. At age 8 Master Kim earned his Black belt in taekwondo and added Hapkido to his daily training regiment. Competition became a huge part of Master Kim’s life and his brother Master Joseph E. Kim who was on the U.S. National Taekwondo Team started training and coaching him for Olympic style taekwondo. Master John Kim won his first Junior Olympic gold medal at age 11 which was just the beginning of his successful career as a competitor.
Master Kim achieved the rank of Black Belt or higher in Taekwondo, Judo and Hapkido by the age of 16. At 17 he decided to take a break from competition and focused on learning how to become a good instructor assisting his father and brother in classes. Within a year he became a full time head instructor and also began coaching students in competition. In May of 2000 Master Kim’s father died of a massive heart attack and Master Kim took over as head of the main school in Fairview Park that was founded in 1968. Master Kim also used his father’s death to fuel him to succeed once again as a competitor and made the U.S. National Team for the first time in 2002.

Meet Our Instructors:
Mr. Willie Thomas
Mr. Thomas began his taekwondo career in 2005 at the age of 14 training at the Junior Taekwondo school in Warren, OH. At the age of 16, he earned his black belt in the art of taekwondo and shortly after started training to become an instructor. After a year of instruction training, he was promoted to the positon of assistant instructor working alongside the head instructor of the school to help teach and guide students to achieve their goals and empower their lives. As time went on, his level of instruction increased until the day I was deemd fit to become a head instructor. In the year 2009, at the age of 18, Mr. Thomas earned his second degree black belt and was officialy a head instructor. Since the day he earned the head instructor postion, Mr. Thomas has worked to instill the values of taekwondo into every student. He believes not only is a martial arts school the place to learn self defense and to stay active, but it is also a space to learn self control, confidence, discipline, respect, perseverance, and leadership. Ultimately, it is the perfect place for anyone of any age to better themselves physically, mentally and spiritually. In the year 2014, Mr. Thomas moved to Cleveland and got the honor to work and train with Master John J. Kim. Now as a third degree black belt instructor under Kim's Martial Arts, he is coming closer and closer to achieving his dream of owning his own school and continuing to spread the art and influence of taekwondo.
